Programs
BCNS offers four days of morning programming for children ages 18 months to 5 years old.
These programs are assigned on scheduled days dependent on the ages of children and those enrolled in September of the following school year. All of our programs are three and a half hours in length, and are packed with creativity, play and learning. Programs are filled on a first come, first serve basis.
Licensed by the Ontario Ministry of Education, BCNS programs follows the provincial pedagogy for early childhood learning.
Evidence from diverse fields of study tells us that children:
- Grow in programs where adults are caring and responsive.
- Succeed in programs that focus on active learning through exploration, play, and inquiry.
- Thrive in programs where they and their families are valued as active participants and contributors.

Toddler Program
18 months – 3 years
Mondays and Wednesdays
8:45am – 12:00pm
Teacher to Student Ratio: 1:5 One teacher for every five children.
Maximum of 10 children
Your toddler will learn through play, observation, socialization and conversation. In this program, the emphasis is on developing a positive self-image, increasing independence, and supporting communication and language development.
We accomplish this through a wide variety of creative activity and learning centres that include using fine motor and cognitive skills as well as gross-motor and outdoor play.
Children will participate in art, dramatic play, sensory activities, scissoring, building and developmentally appropriate science experiments.
We also have more structured activities that include storytelling circles, singing, music and movement.
Children all learn in different ways and at their own pace. Depending on their age and stage of development, your child will play independently, independently alongside their peers, and/or cooperatively with other children in small groups sharing his or her toys and developing friendships.
JK Readiness Program
3-5 years
Starting kindergarten in coming September
Tuesdays and Thursdays
8:45m – 12:00pm
Teacher to Student Ratio: 1:8 One teacher for every eight children.
Maximum of 16 children
The Junior Kindergarten Readiness Program is based on the curriculum standards set by the Ministry of Education. There is an emphasis on increasing independence and promoting confidence and positive self-image.
Your pre-school child will continue to learn through play, observation, socialization and conversation.
We accomplish this through a wide variety of creative activity and learning centres that include using fine motor and cognitive skills as well as gross-motor and outdoor play.
Letters and numbers are woven into the play-to-learn program as children participate in art, dramatic play, sensory activities, scissoring, building and developmentally-appropriate science experiments.
We also have more structured activities that include storytelling circles, singing, music and movement.
Children will participate in a variety of activities that encourage both group and individual interaction. They will expand on their problem-solving abilities, grasp of language, memory and listening skills. At this stage, relationships with classmates and interacting with teachers become more pivotal.
Independent and group play in a loving and nurturing environment are designed to assist children in overcoming fears and separation anxiety.
The Co-Op Program
Parents and guardians interested in enrolling their child(ren) in the Blackstock Co-operative Nursery School programs should know that parental involvement is a significant component of the nursery school’s goals and objectives.
There are two fee levels: Co-op and Non Co-op.
Eligibility for co-op fees and benefits requires a commitment from and allows parents and/or designated guardians to be an active participant in what is likely their child’s first educational experience.
Being part of the co-op program involves an assigned day(s) each month whereby the parent or guardian is responsible for:
- Arriving 30 minutes prior to class to assist with set-up and prep
- Assist in the classroom for the morning
- Toy cleaning happens on alternate weeks. Each co-op member will be scheduled for at least one toy cleaning day per school year. This will require the member to stay at the school for the morning.
- Attend our Annual General Meeting and Board/Parent Meetings (once per month maximum)
- Participate in school fundraising efforts throughout the year, including our annual Breakfast with Santa & Friends
Please Note: Parent, guardians, volunteers and students are not permitted to be alone with any child and are supervised by an employee at all times.
